Forgive

I wrote this about 4 or 5 years ago for a school assignment and as I reread it, I realized how relevant it is to what’s happening in the world today. With all the violence and chaos that is happening, it’s easy for us to become enraged and seek revenge but what exactly is that going to do? “Violence begets violence”-yes but it doesn’t have to. We want the world to change but we’re making it no better by constantly raging war and seeking the lives of those who have wronged us.

Every day there’s constant screaming

Those murders and thieves and their constant scheming

Ready to ruin another life

Ready to take the innocence of someone’s wife

There’s no rule they’re willing to obey

They’ll kill your loved ones and leave to decay

Leaving you broken inside and unwilling to heal

Leaving you hurting a great deal

And the heart is now forever bleeding

The eyes and soul incapable of seeing

Past this gruesome tragedy

Not even words are you able to speak

A cloud of rain for every tear

And you’re living every day in constant fear

Afraid that your time will soon come near

There’s no stopping the growth of their kind

And that’s one problem that’s always preying on our mind

Knowing that those murders still roam

These very streets that you call home

Sometimes we wish we could take matters into our own hands

Stop moping around and take a stand

This sweet lust for revenge now burning in our chest

This overbearing sensation to put those masked marauders to rest

But it’s not worth the effort or blood

Because they’ll always return in a painful flood

This world we live in is a horrible mess

And honestly I must confess

It’s never worth the effort or fight

We always try to see things in black and white

But sometimes we get worse than we would like

And we want to put certain people’s heads on a spike

With a heartbreaking sigh

And try your best to forget

Those horrible tragedies that have made you so upset

All the laughs, all the promises

All those events leading up to this

All those memories will surely be missed

We have to accept it and be brave

And even though the world is enslaved

With heathens, that shouldn’t be allowed to live

And we can’t yet declare that they have one foot in the grave

Life goes on

And we all have things to approve upon

So don’t give up hope, not just yet

Because you’ll get much farther once you learn to forgive
